Voight Othell “V.O.” Phillips, born July 4, 1925 in Cullman called to his Heavenly home on September 25, 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Ella Phillips, four brothers and four Sisters, and one granddaughter, Jessica “Jessi” Brakefield. He graduated from Cold Springs High School lettering in basketball and named to the All County Team. He attended the University of North Alabama (UNA). He served his country in the United States Navy serving during World War II. He was employed with 38 years of service to American Cast Iron Pipe Company (ACIPCO) in various management positions. He was a member of ACIPCO Supervisors Club, National Management Association and The American Foundrymens Society, where he served as committee chairman. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church in Cullman Alabama and attended Gardendale’s First Baptist Church until becoming homebound with his extended illness. He was a 55 year member of Hewitt-North Birmingham Lodge Masonic Lodge #591 and a dual member of Gardendale Masonic Lodge #907. He was a Zamora Shriner and a Emeritus member of the Hillbilly Unit. He was a devoted husband and the best father, grandfather and great-grandfather anyone could ever have. “Pop” was the most kind, giving and caring human on the face of the Earth, and he will truly be missed. He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary E. Farley Phillips; son, Mayor Othell Phillips (Tiffany); daughters, Deloros Holcombe (Steve) and Rhonda Carroll (John); grandchildren, Scott Holcombe (Jennifer), Kim Piersol (Bubba), Nicole Brakefield, Tucker and Chaney Phillips; and great-grand-children, Isaac Brakefield, Katelyn, Kenley and Kileigh Holcombe, Lillie, Morgan and Alexis Piersol. Funeral services were held on Monday, September 28, 2009 at 1 p.m. from the chapel of Gardendale Funeral Home with Brother Doug Moore and Brother Othell Phillips officiating. Interment followed at Oakwood Memorial Gardens with his Masonic Fraternity Brothers serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
