Historical Society

Sept. 19, 10 a.m. The Gardendale Historical Society will meet at the Gardendale Martha Moore Public Library. Guest speaker is Bettye Kimbrell of Mt. Olive, a nationally recognized precise quilter. Moncrief Meeting

Sept. 20, 3 p.m. Moncrief Burial Society will hold its annual meeting at the Gardendale Civic Center in the Dogwood Room.



Swamp John’s Dinner

Sept. 22, 4-6 p.m. Snow Rogers Elementary will host a Swamp John’s fund-raiser dinner at the school. Meal includes choice of catfish, chicken tenders or shrimp plus drink and dessert. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the school. Call 379-5400.

Sports, Outdoors Dinner

Oct. 1, 6:30. Gardendale First Baptist Church will host the first Sports and Outdoors Dinner at the church. Old-fashioned fish fry with all the trimmings. Music

Oct. 3, 5 p.m. David Speegle and Brent Pearl will perform a tribute to the Louvin Brothers at the Gardendale Civic Center Amphitheater. There will also be bluegrass by Glen Tolbert, Bo Chambers and bassist Alan Ogg. Free to the public.



Benefit

Oct. 5, 6:30 p.m. Gardendale based-Building Job Skills for Americans with Disabilities (BJS) will have a fund-raising benefit gala at United Cerebral Palsy, located at 101 Oslo Circle in Birmingham. The benefit will feature a silent art auction and food prepared by chefs Michael Brady and Jason Parkman. Tickets are $25 per person. For more information, visit www.bjsinc.org.



GriefShare

Historical info needed

The Gardendale Historical Society is looking for historical information and old pictures of Gardendale. The society meets the third Saturday of every month, 10 a.m., at the Gardendale-Martha Moore Public Library and always welcomes new members. Call Patsy Duncan, 608-3375.



Free Tot Shots

The Jefferson County Department of Health will host free tot shot clinics the fourth Thursday of each month at Gardendale First Baptist Church in the Family Life Center, 3-5 p.m.

Family Reunion

Sept. 26, 11 a.m. The Graham and Gowins family reunion will be held at Evangel Assembly of God fellowship hall, 2501 Mt. Olive Road at the corner of Hicks Chapel Road. Memorial Fund

The Scott West Memorial Fund has been opened at Superior Bank in Mt. Olive to benefit West’s family.



Free Child Care

There will be free child care in the Mt. Olive area for 3 and 4 year olds. The head start program is now enrolling for the summer. Regular full-day childcare is offered. Call 608-1661.

Church Homecoming

Dinner Concert

Oct. 22, 5,7 p.m. Walkers Chapel Baptist Church, 1525 Briscoe Street in Fultondale, will host the second annual Nehemiah Project Dinner Concert featuring Gospel Quartet Legacy Five. Yard Sale

Sept. 19, 7 a.m. to noon There will be a yard sale at 9781 Deerview Lane in the Promise Manor Subdivision in Kimberly to benefit the North Jefferson Community Action League. The organization still has debt related to the surface mining court battles. There will be clothes, children’s toys, household items, movies, books and much more.



Christmas in Kimberly

Kimberly Town Hall will start taking applications on Oct. 1 from families who need help for Christmas. The fifth annual Kimberly Christmas parade is Dec. 12, with a tree-lighting ceremony to follow. Amish Trip

Oct. 29 The Morris Senior Citizens group will take a trip to Etheridge, Tenn., to visit the Amish community. The cost of $77 includes a guided tour and lunch at the Davey Crocket Restaurant. Cancer Awareness

Sept. 18, 1-7 p.m. As part of Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, the UAB Division of Urology will host a free walk-in prostate cancer screening on the fifth floor of the Kirklin Clinic. Complimentary parking will be in the parking deck at the corner of 6th Avenue South and 21st Street South. The screening will include a digital rectal exam and a blood test. Car Show

Sept. 19, 3 p.m. A car show will be held at the Corner High School football stadium parking lot to raise funds for the school’s new band uniforms. New Country 97.3 will be there. There will be food and activities for kids. Entry fee is $15.



Archery Shoot

Sept. 19 A free 3D Archery Shoot will be held at Camp David in Jones Chapel. From I-65, take Exit 308, go west on Hwy. 278 for 11.6 miles, turn left on Co. Rd. 940, drive 3.7 miles and turn left at “3D Archery” sign. Call Allen Oakley at 488-8716.



NAMI Walk

Oct. 3, 10 a.m. The National Alliance on Mental Illness is hosting a walk to educate Americans about Mental Illness Awareness Week Oct. 4-10. The walk is at the UAB Center for Psychiatric Medicine, 1713 6th Ave. S. Registration is at 9:30 a.m.



Creek Clean-up

Volunteers are needed for the Fall 2009 Five Mile Creek clean-up. On Sept. 26, 9 a.m. to noon, cleanup is around the Coalburg Bridge canoe launch. On Oct. 10, 9 a.m. to noon, cleanup is at Brookside, pulling tires from the creek from the 2003 storm. Bring gloves and expect to get wet.
