Hale County 27, Fultondale 18: Missed opportunities equals loss for Wildcats

MOUNDVILLE – The Wildcats of Fultondale roared into Hale County Friday night, riding high on a 2-0 record. However, the Wildcats of Hale County roared louder, beating Fultondale 27-18.

Fultondale’s offense looked promising in the first quarter after an 85-yard touchdown run by Deundrea Marshall. However, the 2-point conversion failed.

Hale County answered back in the first quarter with a 78-yard touchdown return. Chris McCullough stepped up to block the point-after kick.

Fultondale would score again in the first quarter with a 35-yard run by Chris Barber, but the 2-point conversion failed.

Barber would again find the end zone in the second quarter, but Fultondale had a third failed 2-point conversion.

Hale County scored again in the second quarter on a 4-yard run, topped off by a successful point-after kick.

From then on, Hale County dominated the Wildcats, though neither team scored in the third quarter.

Hale County put up 14 unanswered points on the board in the fourth quarter. The team scored on an option pass, followed by a successful 2-point conversion. With 7:21 remaining in the final quarter, Hale County would again find the end zone with a 6-yard run from the team’s quarterback. However, the extra point was no good.

Fultondale’s ground game was solid throughout the night with 215 yards on 39 carries, but only picked up 1 yard on the passing front.

Barber was the team’s rushing leader with 182 yards on 18 carries and two touchdowns. C.J. Mixon picked up 22 yards on 14 carries and Gary Willis picked up 12 yards on four carries.

McCullough led the defense with 12 tackles and one assist. Sherman Owens had eight tackles on the night.
