All Bryan Elementary students were on hand Friday morning to hear that their school is now held up as an example for other schools across the state.

The Institute for America’s Health (IAH) has chosen Bryan as the first WAY (Wellness, Academics and You) school in the state.

In addition, Bryan was chosen as one of only four IAH charter members across the nation.

Natalie Steed and Laura Gillispie with IAH attended a ceremony at the school Friday, along with Debbie Williams, of physical education coordinator for the Jeffferson County Board of Education, and Ken Story, athletic director for the Jefferson County BOE.

“We use you guys as an example to every school we go to,” Steed told the students.

Bryan has been involved in WAY since its inception in 2006. The purpose of the program is to “promote greater health and wellness amont students through a kid-friendly curriculum,” according to a press release.

In addition to Bryan being named a model school, principal Debra Campbell and physical education teacher Rebecca Recke received individual awards from IAH.

Bryan’s WAY theme for the year is “There’s no place like Bryan.” On hand Friday were the Scarecrow, Lion and Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz.

They helped emphasize the school’s focus this year on brains (academics), courage and integrity, and a healthy heart from exercise and good nutrition.
