COTTONDALE — After losing all his starters, Tabernacle Christian coach Keith Dabbs didn’t think much of his team’s playoff chances in the coming Christian Football Association eight-man football season.

But after the Torches 38-34 upset win at Tuscaloosa Christian on Friday, he might be a little better off than he expected.

“We outlasted ‘em,” Dabbs said. “It was an endurance thing. We just hung around long enough to win.”

Josh Wade’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Dylan Hargreaves with 2:11 left clinched the game for the Torches (1-0, 1-0 CFA). It was the third scoring play for the duo of the night.

The Warriors got out to a quick 26-8 lead in the first half, and were up 34-24 after three periods when Freddie Goodgame scored on a six-yard run with 8:21 left, setting up Wade and Hargreaves to win it.

The difference proved to be the conversions. Tuscaloosa made only two of their five two-point conversions, while the Torches were four out of five. Wade passed for three of them while Hargreaves ran the other.

The Warriors had two chances late to take the game, but Tabernacle’s Jake Webster recovered a fumble on his own 17-yard line, then Goodgame stopped the home team’s last chance with an interception with just 69 seconds to play.

Wade was 9-for-13 for 114 yards with no interceptions for the night.

Hargreaves was 5-78 in receiving, and gained 20 yards on 11 rush attempts. He also led on defense with 12 tackles and three assists.

Will Miller ran the ball four times for 55 yards. Goodgame had 13 rushes for 39 yards, plus the interception and a sack.

Nathan Foster had seven assists on defense to go with his three tackles.

The Torches play out of conference next week, as they travel to McDonough, Ga., to face Peoples’ Baptist Academy.
