The state on Monday released education figures regarding No Child Left Behind, with most public schools in north Jefferson County meeting all goals.

In Alabama, 86 percent of schools met 100 percent of all requirements during the 2008-09 school year to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) goals.

In the Jefferson County school system, 45 schools made AYP, while eight failed in at least one area. In Blount County, all Hayden schools made AYP.

This is the sixth year of AYP implementation under the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act.

NCLB calls for standards to increase every year for meeting AYP requirements. The goal is for all students to be proficient in reading and math by 2014.

Sixty-four percent of the 186 schools statewide that did not make AYP failed by only one goal, according to a press release from the State of Alabama Department of Education.

Such was the case with the only two schools in north Jefferson County that did not make AYP: Warrior Elementary School, which met 12 of 13 goals, and Fultondale High School, which met 16 of 17 goals.

Neither of the local schools failed any academic goals. Rather, both fell short on the Additional Academic Indicators (AAI) component.

Warrior Elementary scored 94.15 percent on attendance, while the state goal is 95 percent.
