Treadaway speaks to seniors on county financial woes
State Representative Allen Treadaway has never shied away from voicing his opinion about mismanagement at the state and county level.
The legislator, who represents north Jefferson County’s 51st district, spoke at the Gardendale Senior Center Friday about the Jefferson County Commission’s financial crisis and how it could affect county programs, from senior centers to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
A veteran officer with the Birmingham Police Department, Treadaway predicted the county could run out of money by month’s end and several services would be affected, including law enforcement.
Council passes ALDOT measure
Those who have driven on Interstate 65 through Gardendale can tell you a thing or two about potholes.
The Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) is planning to fix the problem, with the cooperation of the City of Gardendale.
On Wednesday, the Gardendale City Council adopted a resolution that will give ALDOT the right-of-way to resurface 4.669 miles of Interstate 65 from the Walker Chapel Road exit to the Mt. Olive Road exit.
“Even though we’re not heading up the project or funding the project, it goes right through the middle of the city,” said Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips. “That’s why they had to get us to pass the resolution.”
Gardendale leaders mull future of sports complex
Gardendale is dreaming big for the expansion of the Kenneth A. Clemons Sports Complex.
On Wednesday, several guests were invited to the Gardendale Parks and Recreation board meeting, held under a pavilion next to the city’s new Splash Pad.
The Gardendale City Council attended, as well as John S. Godwin with the architect firm Godwin-Barnett, and Matt Hawes with CDG Engineers and Associates.
The purpose of the meeting, according to Parks and Recreation superintendent Stan Hogeland, was to inform the city council of the land use plan for the park and to get the council’s input on it.
Military vehicle and swap meet show to be held later this month
Veterans and civilians alike are invited take part in a military vehicles show in Mt. Olive.
The Mt. Olive Military Vehicle and Swap Meet Show, sponsored by the Dixie Division Military Vehicles Club, will be July 31 and Aug. 1 at Gamble’s Truck Accessories on Mt. Olive Road.
The main show will be on Aug. 1, but Guin will be at Gamble’s the previous day if anyone wants to spend the night.
Limited RV hookups are available. There is no fee for vendors to set up a booth.
Ronnie Guin, vice president of the vehicles club, does not yet know how many vehicles will be at the meet.
He does know, however, that the oldest jeep in the club will be there.
