Animal You Should Know — SWAT the Cat

SWAT is an honorary member of the Morris Police Department. He is a male rescue cat who has lived at the department, housed at Morris City Hall, for two years. His answers were translated by City Hall employees.

• What do you contribute to the City of Morris?

I greet the town clerk and the magistrate at their car every morning, making them happy to arrive at work.

• What is your biggest talent?

I can smell marijuana. I can always tell when someone walks in who has had it in their possession. I will jump into their lap if they’re sitting down, or rub against their legs.

• What is the scariest thing that has happened to you?

Once when a chaplain was visiting inmates, I jumped into his car. He drove off without realizing I was in there. Even though it scared him to death when he saw me, he brought me back home to City Hall.

• Who feeds you and pays for your vet visits and so forth?

Everybody feeds me, all day long. The employees all pitch in to pay for food, my shots and my visits to the vet.

• Where do you sleep?

I have my own chair in the squad room. Do not sit on it: I have marked it with lots of cat hair. I also sleep in the mayor’s chair sometimes and I have been known to sleep with inmates if they don’t mind.

• Do you have any feline friends?

I’m friends with an orange female who lives in a storm gutter nearby.

• How did you get your name?

Two reasons. One is that when I was a kitten, I liked to swat at everything. I’m also named for the SWAT (Special Weapons and Tactics) team.

• Do you chase mice?

I’m scared of them. I run away from them. It’s a little embarrassing.

• Do you go anywhere you want?

Yes, I go inside and outside, whatever suits my whim. I basically run the place and do anything I want.
