- Katie VonHagel: Namesake for charity golf tourney at Castle Pines
It began as a simple request for help for the Knights of Columbus by the mother of Fultondale youngster Katie VonHagel, and now has grown into the area’s biggest charity golf event.
The fifth annual Swinging for Katie’s Kids Golf Tournament takes place on July 17 at Castle Pines Golf Course.
The tournament, whose proceeds go to LapsForCF.org, raised about $3,000 in its first outing, according to director Thom Duran.
“Last year, we were able to raise $22,000,” Duran said. “And this money goes just to kids in Alabama.”
Only a handful of team packages are still available at $300 each. Duran says four or so spots are open; others will have to go on stand-by.
Duran and his staff are still seeking hole sponsors at $250 each, as well as “tree sponsors” — business or individuals recognized by signs on trees along the course — for just $35 each.
