In 2012, look for Kayla Smith in a clinic or a hospital working with mothers-to-be.

Smith, a Fultondale High School senior, will start school at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville this fall in the diagnostic medical sonography program. She said the program should take her three years to complete.

“I like the fact that I’ll get to see babies before anybody else gets to see them,” said Smith. “I would love to get a job at a small clinic. I wouldn’t be on call as much and I could be more personal with my patients.”

Smith, who has attended Fultondale schools since Kindergarten, apparently has what it takes to pursue a career in the medical field.

“Kayla is very conscientious,” said Suellen Edmondson, Fultondale High School business education teacher and the senior class sponsor. “She’s very dedicated and hard-working. I would take a classroom full of students like her. She’s just always willing to do anything you ask of her.”

Smith is very involved at Fultondale High School. She is a member of the Ambassadors, National Honor Society, the yearbook staff and is on the precalculus math team.

Smith had earned a $16,000 collegiate honors scholarship to UAB, but decided to turn it down in order to attend classes at WSCC.

As for personal values, Smith said the most important thing to her is her Christian faith.

“The values and morals we have are very important to me,” she said. “It’s especially very important to keep the sanctity of marriage.”

Smith worships at Fultondale First Baptist Church, where she sings with the praise band.

Smith is the daughter of Mike and Terry Smith. She has a sister, Angel Smith, and two brothers: Josh Holmes, married to Amy, and Toby Holmes, married to Lonna.

She also has two nieces, Ada, 3, and Evie, 1, and a nephew, Zane, 5 months old.
