At least four math teams from schools in north Jefferson County ranked well in the Jefferson County Mathematics Tournament, held April 28-29 at McWane Center in Birmingham.
Schools ranking in the top 10 for individuals or the top three for teams were Mortimer Jordan High School, Fultondale High School, North Jefferson Middle School and Bragg Middle School.
Mortimer Jordan’s calculus team finished in second place, under the leadership of teacher and team coach Tracey Schmidt.
Fultondale High School earned two team places: Third place for geometry and third place for precalculus.
This, despite the fact that FHS does not have a regular math team.
“I just chose which students would attend. They didn’t know they were going until three days before the tournament,” said Larry Gilbert, math teacher.
“The greatest satisfaction for a teacher is to see his students successfully apply what he has taught them,” said Gilbert. “I wish I could take credit for the success we had at the county math tournament, but I can’t. I didn’t take the test. The kids did all of the work and they deserve all of the credit.”
North Jefferson Middle School’s team, under teacher and coach Holly Manning, won third place in the Math 6 category.
Bragg Middle School placed first for prealgebra and third for algebra. Bragg’s seventh-grade math coach is Anita Osborn and Bragg’s eighth-grade coach is Holly Brown.
Six schools placed in the top 10 at the high-school level, with Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School placing first in all categories.
Nine schools placed in the top 10 at the middle school level, with first place going to Bragg, Oak Grove High, Hueytown Middle and Clay Chalkville.
