An alleged case of attempted sexual assault led to a standoff in Mt. Olive on Tuesday.
Jefferson County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call in the 5900 block of Mt. Olive Road at about 3 p.m.
Lt. Randy Christian said a 17-year-old female had brought food to the home of a 74-year-old man, who then attempted to assault the girl. The victim then left the home before the man fired a shotgun in the air. The man then locked himself inside a barn behind the home.
Christian said the sheriff’s office SWAT team was dispatched and made entry into the barn after a relative was unable to coerce the suspect into coming out.
After the forced entry was made, the suspect surrendered without incident and was taken by ambulance and admitted to UAB Hospital after having shortness of breath and elevated blood pressure.
Christian said upon his release, he will face reckless endangerment charges in relation to firing the shotgun.
The 17-year-old has reportedly declined to file charges related to the attempted assault.
