It took a while to come up with a winner, but in the end Gardendale came away with its second consecutive Jefferson County Girls Tennis Championship Tuesday at Moncrief Park.
The Rockets won four of the six singles brackets, which were decided last week at Jefferson State. But time ran out before the doubles finals could be played, and when those were decided Tuesday, Gardendale swept all three.
The No. 1 doubles team of Taylor Lindsay and Sarah Schaefers looked to have their final well in hand, with a 7-4 lead and the serve. But Hueytown’s Shannon Warner and Amber Phillips broke the Rockets’ twice and held their own in a deuce game to tie it up at 7-7. But Lindsey and Schaefers broke the Gophers’ serve and then served out the match to win 9-7.
Gardendale took the team title with 62 points. Pinson Valley was second with 30, followed by Hueytown at 26.
