Nathan McIntosh, a senior at Mortimer Jordan High School, was recently named the America’s First Credit Union and ABC 33/40 Student of the Week.
He was awarded on April 6 in front of the Mortimer Jordan baseball team.
McIntosh received a $25 Visa gift card and will attend a banquet on April 14 along with other Student of the Week winners.
He is also in the running for a $1,000 scholarship.
Ericka Webb, manager of the Gardendale branch of America’s First, said that criteria for winning the award include grades and school involvement.
McIntosh also wrote an essay as a contender for the award.
In addition, McIntosh has received a Beeson Scholarship of $120,000 to Samford University in Birmingham.
Mortimer Jordan High School principal Barbara Snider said that McIntosh is fully deserving of the honors. She called the senior a hard-worker who has overcome great odds.
In Sept. 2008, McIntosh tore the UCL in his right arm while pitching during a baseball showcase at Samford.
While recovering from Tommy John surgery, McIntosh did not spend his time sitting around.
“I learned to throw left-handed with my dad,” said McIntosh. “It was awkward at first, but I learned to do it.”
McIntosh actually pitched one game as a left-hander, but he spent most of his time playing center field.
He said one of his highlights in high-school baseball came last year during the second round playoffs against Russellville.
“I pitched the whole game with a broken middle finger,” McIntosh said.
McIntosh has a long list of academic and athletic achievements, including serving as president of the National Honor Society, vice president of Key Club and vice president of the senior class. He has also lettered in varsity baseball, basketball and cross country.
McIntosh is the son of Ron and Linda McIntosh.
