The City of Gardendale is looking to do some heavy spring cleaning next month and it’s looking for some helping hands.

The city’s first big project, “Operation Clean Sweep,” will take place on April 4 at the Gardendale Civic Center at 7:30 a.m. The city has invited residents, civic groups and churches to attend and help pick up litter throughout the city limits from 8 a.m. to noon.

“We’re hoping to bring a sense of pride to the community and trying to get as many residents and businesses as we can to buy into the program, beautify our city and make it attractive to prospective residents and businesses,” said Gardendale Mayor Othell Phillips.

However, the day won’t be all work and no play. There will be an award for the most unusual litter item, in addition to other prizes and certificates.

Not to be outdone, the Gardendale Police Department will also be cracking down on individuals caught littering through the month of April.

Penalties include a $500 fine for anyone caught throwing trash out of a moving vehicle onto city streets or private property. However, when it comes to cigarette butts, Walker said it would be left up to the officer’s discretion.

In mid-April, the city’s public works department will have its annual white goods pickup throughout the city the week of April 13-17. Large items that homeowners may be unable to discard can be placed on the curb in front of the house and will be picked up by the city.

The pickup does not include household garbage or perishable items.

The public works department would also like to have volunteers to help elderly or disabled persons get those items from their home to the curb.

To schedule the pickup of an item or to volunteer, contact the Gardendale Public Works Department at 631-3394.
