Fire hydrants checked
The Gardendale Fire Department will be testing all fire hydrants within the city in the month of March.
The hydrants will be inspected, which includes flushing the hydrants. Residents may notice a slight discoloration to their water, but if they allow the water to run for a few seconds, it should clear up, according to Gardendale Fire Marshal Rick Smith.
He said annual inspection of hydrants are required to maintain the City’s ISO rating which proportionately affects homeowners insurance rates.
“Annual inspection also allows us the assurance that in an emergency situation, the hydrants are functional. Hydrants can be clogged with sediment,” Smith said. “Flushing them will clear the debris so they can be used at full capacity.”
