Bunko Night

Feb. 21 Gardendale Aegis Annual Bunko Night will be held on Feb. 21. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. Bunko starts immediately after dinner. Tickets are $30 per couple. Tickets available at Capital South Bank, or from any Aegis member. For information, please call 531-7032.



Wild Game Dinner

Winter Wonderland Dance

Feb. 28 The sixth annual 2009 Winter Wonderland Dance with Edd Jones Band is scheduled for Feb. 28. In preparation for the dance, Jackie Tally and Andy Anderson will be teaching lessons each Tuesday night from 7 to 8 p.m. beginning Jan. 20 through Feb. 24 in the exhibition hall at the Gardendale Civic Center.



Singing

March 1 Pineywood Baptist Church, 498 Pineywood Road, will celebrate homecoming March 1. Worship will be at 10:30 a.m., Lunch will be at noon, with a time of singing in the afternoon at 1:30 p.m. with Sacred Harvest providing the special music.



Senior Lunch

March 3 All seniors are invited to be with North Gardendale Baptist Church on March 3 at 10:30 a.m. in the Family Life Center. Special guest singers will be Harold Freeman and his group. Enjoy good singing, lunch and fellowship. For more information call Marie Johnson at 631-4592.

Senior Center Tours

The Gardendale Senior Center invites Gardendale residents to tour the center during the month of February for “Love Your Senior Neighbor Month.” This is for those who are age 60 and older or those married to someone 60 and older, or family to bring parents who need to get out and socialize or need better nutrition or exercise Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday-Thursday and 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Fridays. Meals are served daily at 11:30 a.m., Bingo on Mondays and Thursdays; live entertainment on Tuesdays; exercise and speakers on senior concerns on Wednesdays; bluegrass on Thursdays; pancake breakfast and also a new introductory Spanish class on Fridays.



Mount Olive



Special Classes

Mt. Olive First Baptist Church will hold a new Bible study for men and women on Beth Moore’s Esther: It’s Tough Being a Woman. and Neal Jeffrey’s Man I Want to Be. Women will meet on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. or Feb. 19 at 9 a.m. or Feb. 22 at 4:30 p.m. Men will meet on Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. Student books for women are $17 and men are $10. Free Child Care

There will be free child care in the Mt. Olive area for 3 and 4 year olds. The head start program is now enrolling for the summer. Regular full day childcare is offered. Call 608-1661.



Registration

February Mount Olive Ball Park baseball and softball youth registration will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday in February. Ages 3 and older are welcome. For more info call Darla Martin at 965-1071. Prices are $60 to $125 depending on age and division of play.

Charity Lunch

Feb. 20 A barbecue lunch sponsored by the Walker Chapel United Methodist Women’s Group, will be held Feb. 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Eat in or carry out. The $7 plate includes bar-b-cue, bun, slaw, baked beans, dessert and drink. For more information call the church.

Smoke Detectors

The Kimberly Fire Department is accepting names and telephone numbers for Kimberly residents to receive a free smoke detector. Residents who are elderly, have young children or are disabled qualify to receive the detectors, which will be installed by fire fighters. Call Kimberly Town Hall at 647-5551.

Mother’s Day Out

Enon Baptist Church’s Mother Day Out program will offer childcare for children 6 weeks to 4 years old on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program follows the Jefferson County School System calendar, so is closed during all of the breaks. For more information call 647-9614.

Gardening Course

The Cullman County Office of The Alabama Cooperative Extension System with the Cullman County Master Gardener Association is offering the Alabama Master Gardener Course from Jan. 28 to April 22. Space is limited. For more info, call (256) 737-9386.



Critter Club

Ginger Tunnell (Grammy) is teaching “Critter Club” at the Birmingham Zoo. This is a one hour class for 3-5 year olds. They will learn about a new animal each week and have hands on experience with a live animal. This takes place on Tuesdays 10 -11 a.m. and 1:15 – 2:15 p.m., Wednesdays and Thursdays 10 – 11a.m. Register at the class or online at www.birminghamzoo.com (Education). Meals On Wheels

Feb. 2009, The Jefferson County Office of Senior Citizens Services (OSCS) Meals on Wheels Program seeks volunteers, individuals, or group organizations to deliver meals 1 to 2 hours out of their day, or even once a month to help. Currently, Meals on Wheels serves on average 3,800 hot meals per week to 960 clients, but due do the lack of volunteers there are around 400 people on the waiting list for the program. Play

Feb. 22 As part of the Artburst series at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Birmingham, The Seasoned Performers will present Don Juan in Hell. There will be one performance only on February 22 at 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 and $10 for seniors and students. For more information 978-5095.



Beauty Pageant

Feb. 27 The Winter Princess 2009 Beauty Pageant Sponsored by Hayden Elementary School will take place on March 14 at 10 a.m. at Hayden High School gym for children up to five years old. Singing

March 1 Mt. View Baptist Church will have an old-fashioned singing March 1 at 2 p.m. with special guests, The Turner Family. The singing will follow the regular services. Benefit concert

March 7 Safe Harbor’s third annual Beacon of Hope benefit concert will be March 7, 7 p.m., at Southeastern Bible College at 2545 Valleydale Road, Birmingham. Art on the Lake

April 18, 19 Art on the Lake, an annual two-day arts and crafts event in Guntersville, is now accepting applications from artists and vendors who wish to exhibit in the show.
