Girls basketball roundup: Cleveland upsets Hayden in Blount County Tournament

Sissy Green scored 17 points and was 8-for-10 from the free throw line — 7-for-8 in the fourth quarter — as the host Panthers upset the top-seeded Wildcats in the semifinals of the Blount County Tournament Thursday.
After the teams battled on mainly even terms in the first half, Cleveland slowed things down in the second, disrupting Hayden’s game and holding them to just three points in the third period.
The Wildcats were forced to foul in the late going, and ended up with just four players on the court when Krista Stricklin, Kris Quick and Tiffany Myrick fouled out.
Jessica Holder scored 14 for Cleveland and Ashley Harris had 13, going 3-for-5 from behind the 3-point line.
Madison Durham led the Wildcats with 13 points and eight rebounds. Myrick had 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks. Stricklin finished with nine points.
Corner 67, Fultondale 48
Nicole Russell scored 24 points, including 13 in the first quarter alone, as the Yellow Jackets ran out to a 23-8 first-quarter lead and never looked back.
Mandy Slatton had 17 points with five 3-pointers, and Karissa Reeves had eight points with a pair of threes for Corner.
Britani Howell led the Wildcats with 13 points and Karleena Unlap scored 10.
Tabernacle Christian 35, Victory Christian-Columbus, Miss. 29
Candace Coleman racked up 17 points and nine rebounds as the Torches edged past Victory.
Kari White, seeing action for the first time after an ankle injury, scored 10 for Tabernacle.
Emelia Strickland led Victory with 20 points.
Erwin 54, Mortimer Jordan 39
Peyton Davis had 14 points and Haylie McCleney scored nine, but Erwin’s win Thursday locked up second seed over Jordan in the Area 11 tournament.
Khristian Lee led the Eagles with 21 points, and Briana Shepherd has 12.
