Kimberly Seniors By Jody Newman
The North Jefferson News
Wasn’t it great to get back to the Kimberly Senior Center after the holidays?
We had so much to catch up on, especially our hugs.
And what an exciting first week back with really fine attendance and even new members. The place was hopping most of the week and it’s going to get more so.
This past Monday, we started dance lessons with member instructors Clarence and Ruth Downs. This is so we look really smooth (ha-ha) when we have our Valentine’s Dance on Feb. 12. We’re really looking forward to a fun-packed evening, even if we don’t learn all the fancy steps.
Next week we have plans to begin learning computers in earnest. Instead of trying to learn all the technical stuff, we will be trying to learn the things that we seniors most care about when using our computers.
Although we have a fine teacher — John Richardson — to help us, we are going to spend one-on-one time learning from each other, too. Many of us have a “smidgen” of knowledge about our computers, but there’s functions we would like to do and don’t know how to accomplish them. I hope our time spent together at the computers will be profitable for each one of us.
On Jan. 27, a trip to the new Bass Pro Shop in Leeds is planned for those who want to go. Us ladies were having so much fun on our day trips that the men insisted that they get somewhere to go, too. I outlawed Hooter’s, but Bass Pro is fine.
As many of you know, we have been opening our center on Saturday nights at 6:30 for bluegrass and gospel music with Dick Nail, a local musician, and others. It has worked out so well that I recently invited other seniors in the community to join us to play cards and/or dominos, etc. while the music is playing. There’s no need to sit home in Kimberly on a Saturday night. We have a place of fun and fellowship, and it’s free.
We have been invited by a local retirement community to play in a Nintendo Wii tournament and have it scheduled in March. If you are a senior and would like to play with us, come on in and try it out. We have a competitive bunch who will be playing to win.
If you’re not sure if you’d like anything we offer, stop by and get an activities sheet and meet our friendly seniors. We promise, rather than tying you to a chair and making you stay, we’ll just make you feel welcome and you can come and go as you wish.
May God richly bless all of you!
