Girls basketball roundup: Blue Devils rout John Carroll; shooting problems hurt Rockets

Mortimer Jordan 59, John Carroll 36

It wasn’t a rout from the start, but it was close.

“We didn’t score for the first three minutes, then before I knew it, we were up 15-5,” said Jordan coach Marty Caldwell.

Brianna Nation and Haylie McCleney led the Blue Devils with 13 points each. Consuela Austin had 10 points and Peyton Davis added nine.

Amy Metzler had 10 points, including a pair of 3-point buckets, to lead the Cavaliers.



Vestavia Hills 41, Gardendale 28

Shooting woes beset the Rockets all night, as they were 9-for-39 from the floor for just 21 percent.

“They did a really good job on defense, not letting us get clean looks,” said coach Ryan Griffin.

Bridget Williams led the Rebels with 11 points, and Kathleen Smith put in 10.

Kasey Jones was the only Rocket in double figures with 10 points.



Erwin 48, Hayden 43

A short-handed Wildcats squad the dressed out only seven players had problems battling Erwin’s physical play all night, but kept the contest close until the very end.

The Eagles only shot 30 percent from the floor, but had 60 attempts.

Kristian Lee led all scorers with 18 points for the Eagles (17-6, 4-1). Andria Buchanan scored 12 points and Tionna Bell added 10 for the Eagles.

Krista Stricklin had 13 points to pace the Wildcats (15-4, 3-4). Madison Durham grabbed 10 rebounds and Tiffany Myrick had eight more, along with six blocks. Mallory Ray had nine points and seven assists.



Fultondale 58, Oak Grove 36

Up by just seven points after three periods, the Wildcats exploded to score 23 points in the final quarter, holding the Tigers to just eight.

Diamond Stanley had 19 points, Briana Griffin had 15 and Britani Howell contributed 12 for Fultondale.

Sommer Lawrence led the Tigers with 13 points, and Summer Hicks had 11.
