Russell shines with 23 points

Corner’s Nicole Russell tuned in another big night to lead Corner past Cleveland 47-37 Tuesday night.

Russell lead the team in scoring with 26 points.

“Nicole Russell played really good for us,” said Yellow Jacket head coach Jeff Smith. “We are fortunate and blessed that we have a group of girls that play hard.

“We’re not the greatest basketball players, but we are a really good team. The girls get along and play well together. Their going to accomplish a lot of things this year. We’re not there as far as basketball yet, but if they continue to play hard we’ll get there. I am extremely pround of how they played tonight.”

Early in the game, the Jackets suggled to get things going. Cleveland’s Sissy Green hit two three-pointers to in the first period to make the game closer then it should have been early on. But Corner led at the end of the first period 13-10.

The Jackets’ defense took over in the second period holding the Panthers to only five points in the period.

Corner took control in the third period, led by Russell, who had 10 points in the quarter.

In the fourth the Panthers got the game within seven points, but the Jacket offense was just too much. Both Russell and Shannon Tolbert had six points in the period to lead Corner to the victory.

Katelyn Geddings lead all Corner rebounders with seven, Erin Tingle had four, and Russell and Shannon Tolbert added three each.

Corner plays its first area game of the season Friday night when it travels to Oak Grove.
