Stopping a pin-point passer throwing to good route-running receivers will be the test facing the Mortimer Jordan defense this Friday as the Devils travel to Cullman for a region showdown with the unbeaten Bearcats.
“They’ve got a really good quarterback, who puts the ball just where he wants it,” Mortimer Jordan head coach Greg Watts said. “They’ve got good receivers, maybe not speedy receivers, but pass catchers who get open.”
Watts said the Blue Devil’s offense can aid the Jordan defense by holding onto the ball and keeping the high octane Bearcat offense on the sidelines.
“We’ve got to control the ball and the clock on offense,” Watts said. “Then when they have the ball, we need to get some pressure on their quarterback. He’s not very mobile, he’s better at dropping back and throwing it. But, somehow, we’ve got to find a way to pressure him.”
Currently, Cullman (4-0) is averaging 35.8 points per game in four straight region wins. The Bearcats have already secured a spot in the Class 5A playoffs and are now playing for the right to defend their Region 6 title from a year ago.
Last week, the Blue Devils led most of the game, but a late Springville drive in the final two minutes sent Jordan to its second straight region loss after two straight wins.
