I hope everyone had a safe and wonderful Labor Day Holiday Weekend.
• We just received official word this week that the new JC Penney’s store will open to the public on Sept. 28 and the Grand Opening will be held on Oct. 3. The new Stix restaurant should be opening in three weeks.
• The Founder’s Day Festival has been rescheduled for Sept. 13 at Black Creek Park. Please make plans to attend.
• Congratulations to the first graduating class of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Officer Allen Rogers and instructor Mike Harter with the Alabama EMA headed up the program to get local senior citizens involved in assisting the city in the event or a natural disaster. They received special training in how to handle certain situations and we are very proud of their community involvement. Those that attended the nine-week class were Daris Cook, Shirley Merrill, Reba Denney, John Spicer, Dorothy and Bobby Byrd, Lynn and Danny Sample, Anita Rogers, Anita Nelson, Ruby Cook, Randall Parker, Mac Easterling, Margaret Newman, Al Wallace, John Evans and James Nelson. Our special thanks for their involvement and interest in our city.
• The Lewisburg Reunion is scheduled for Sept. 27 at the new Fultondale Elementary School Lunchroom from 4 to 6 p.m. If you ever attended Lewisburg come on out and reminisce with everyone. If you need directions or any other information contact Edna at 647-2745.
• The Foster/Elkins Annual Family Reunion will be Sept. 27 at 85 Smoke Rise Lane in Hayden. This will be an all-day reunion for those of you that would like to attend. For directions or other information call 647-3192.
• Congratulations to Kathy Goodwin-Englebert, who will be a grandmother in February. Her daughter, Deanna, is expecting a boy. Congratulations!
• Congratulations to the Fultondale High School Wildcats, who are playing great football. I would also like to mention the great band we have and the good job the cheerleaders do. Thanks for the team spirit.
• If you need a handy man for small jobs, contact Alan Hall, the children’s pastor of the Church Revived. He is raising money because he is involved with a mission opportunity that will allow him some training at a conference with Rick Warren at Saddle Back Church. Call Alan at 514-2226 for grass cutting, painting, cleaning out your garage, etc.
• Congratulations to Wayne Martin from Mt. Olive who has been with the Birmingham News for most of his life and will be retiring on Sept. 19. We wish him the best of luck with his retirement. I am sure he will continue traveling to see his favorite baseball teams play ball. We will miss him.
• I would like to send a special happy birthday wish to my good friend and co-worker, Kim (Hubbert) Powell on Sept. 4. I hope she has a wonderful birthday and many more! Good friends are a special gift from God and I am very blessed!
• A very special happy eighth birthday wish to “my” grandson, Eli Booker on Sept. 5. I did not realize how special grand children were until I had my own and I love him dearly. Eli’s Big Daddy, Jimmy Wayne Barnes, would have been 57 on Sept. 7. We truly miss him.
• A special happy birthday wish to Destiny Berryhill, who became a teenager (13) on Sept. 3. She celebrated her birthday with a camp-out and wiener roast at her home with family and friends. They had a great time and stayed up most of the night. We hope she had a great birthday.
• Our heartfelt sympathy goes to the family of James Adams of Hayden. He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather who will be truly missed by all those that knew and loved him.
• Happy birthday wishes go to our good friends: Gene Arwood on Sept. 4, to Roland Glasgo on Sept. 3 and to Rubin Gray on Sept. 7. We hope they have great birthdays and many, many more.
• A special happy eighth anniversary wish to Kathy (Goodwin) and Carl Englebert on Sept. 9. I hope they have a wonderful anniversary. Also, a special happy birthday wish to Carl on Sept. 9. I hope he has a great birthday, even though he is getting really old. I can say that, because I am right behind him.
• Special happy birthday wishes to city employees: officer Bruce Smith on Sept. 1; Gail Cooper on Sept. 2; officer Allen Evans on Sept. 3; Brooke Garrett on Sept. 5; and Jeff Fuller on Sept. 9. All of you do a great job for the city and we hope you have great birthdays.
• A special happy belated birthday wish to Lee Bolden on Aug. 22. He is the son of Diane and Jack Bolden. We hope he had a great birthday.
• Remember if you have news, anniversaries, birthdays or reunions, let me know.
