Church celebration slated for next week

The 50th anniversary celebration of Central Baptist Church will take place on Sept. 14 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The special speaker will be Henry Cox. Morning service will be followed by a covered dish luncheon. There will be an afternoon celebration starting at 2 p.m. including former pastors, members and ministers of music. Childcare for birth through 4 years old is provided. There will also be activities for children 5 years old through fifth grade during the afternoon service. • The Gardendale Chamber of Commerce will host SCORE, a voluntary organization of retired business executives at its Sept. 11 luncheon at 11:30 a.m. The group will talk about its services, which includes free counseling to budding entrepreneurs and existing small businesses. Non-chamber members interested in attending the luncheon should contact Joy Clayton at the Gardendale Chamber of Commerce by Sept. 9 at noon. She can be reached at 631-9195.

• Meetings of Cancer Conquerors, a community cancer support group including family and caregivers, will start on Sept. 7 at 6 p.m. at Gardendale First Baptist Church. For questions, call Melissa Stephens at 631-7042 or Rebecca Sloan 631-8097.

• Gardendale Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church will hold a flea market, craft show and fabric sale on Sept. 13 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are booth spaces available. For more information call 631-7631.

• Happy birthday to my former pastor, Larry Dodd, on Sept. 7. Larry is a mighty man of God and I hope he has a wonderful birthday.

• Friendship Independent Church in Birmingham will be holding a singing tomorrow with the Spurgeons. Lunch will be served. For more information you can call the church.

• Happy first anniversary tomorrow to Jonathan and Jennifer Fox.

• Gardendale’s Alumni from the Class of 1968 are planning reunion activities the weekend of homecoming. They will not only participate in the parade, but will attend the game and enjoy homecoming festivities. 1968 was the first year that GHS had a graduating class. A large number of these graduates remained in Gardendale and have made a big contribution to the development of our city. They plan to attend the homecoming game on Oct. 3, then have a dinner and entertainment at the Exhibition Hall of the Gardendale Civic Center on Oct. 4.
