MORRIS—The Mortimer Jordan Lady Blue Devils trailed Sumiton Christian early in their match Tuesday night, but once they got going, they took control and won going away in a three-game sweep of the Lady Eagles, 25-21, 25-15 and 25-15.
“We were a little nervous at first,” junior middle blocker Peyton Davis said after the win. “A big part of our student body came out to support us tonight and I think it made us a little tight at the start.”
Jordan trailed by as many as five points in the first game, but tied the score at 20-all on Summer Martin’s ace.
After the game was tied at 21, the Lady Devils closed it out with a 4-0 run.
They started fast in the second game racing to a 7-0 lead. Jordan led by as many as 11 points, before coasting home for a two-game lead.
In the third game, the Lady Devils opened with a 4-0 run, behind two aces from Brittany Barber, who finished the match with seven aces to lead all players.
Her high game was the second game when she served up four aces.
Sumiton responded and cut the lead to three points, at 10-7, but Jordan then surged again with a 9-2 run to take a 10-point lead.
The victory evened the Lady Devils record at 1-1. Jordan had lost their season opener against Dora on Aug. 28.
Davis led the attack with 11 kills and a block. She also added two aces. Ashlee Porter had four kills and three aces.
Ashley Merritt did fine work from her setter’s position as she finished with nine assists and two aces.
Shawna Davis added four kills. Martin and Elisabeth Naramore had two aces each for Jordan.
Jordan hosts Pinson Valley on Sept. 4 and then hosts a tri-match on Sept. 8.
