Central Avenue entrance closed for repairs

Mayor Jim Lowery announced at Monday’s Fultondale City Council meeting that the entrance to Central Avenue from U.S. 31 would be closed until late Wednesday or Thursday afternoon for road work. Crews have been working to widen the entrance enabling a smoother traffic flow in and out of the elementary school.

In other business, the council announced that retailer Ross will have a soft opening on Thursday, followed by a grand opening on Saturday.

In other business, the council:

• approved a business license for Gentleman’s Choice barber shop to be located at 2512 Walker Chapel Road

• authorized the mayor to negotiate and enter into a contract with Ingenuity for power and telecommunications expense management. The group reportedly can take a look at what the city pays in tariffs on power and telecommunications and works to negotiate a less expensive tariff. The group reportedly only gets paid if it is able to save the city money.

• appointed City Clerk Jane Hicks to handle the duties of the 2008 municipal election since Mayor Lowery has qualified as a candidate

• adopted the provisions of Alabama Act 2006-570 to set compensation for the absentee elections manager for all elections, both general and special, from and after the date of adoption

ACCESS learning to reach high schools by 2009

All high schools in Alabama will have ACCESS Distance Learning by the time school begins in August 2009, Gov. Bob Riley and State Superintendent of Education Joe Morton said last week. “No other state in America has videoconferencing and web-based learning in all its high schools. Alabama will,” Riley said. “This is an investment not only in technology, this is an investment in our children.”

Correction

The North Jefferson News printed an incorrect name in the July 12 edition. Robert Yeager requested a business license to open an AMVETS club in Kimberly, not Robert Taylor.
