‘The Movement’ preview – Victim Services fundraiser

BMX bikers and rock bands are coming together Saturday at the Cullman County Fairgrounds for a fundraiser called The Movement, which is raising money for Victim Services of Cullman.

Local volunteer Lynn Duncan, who is responsible for the event, said she was inspired to help VSOC last year when she saw the needs that exist there first-hand.

“Last year they gave me a tour of the facilities and I was just heartbroken,” she said. “I couldn’t believe the needs they have. It’s such a small amount of space and resources for all the people they help there.”

Wanting to make things better, Duncan said she enlisted the help of her husband, Patrick Duncan, to plan a fundraiser — with all proceeds going to VSOC.

“We had a planning meeting and everything just started coming together,” she said.

With the help of her husband and various volunteers, Duncan has managed to book a BMX bike team as well as numerous musical acts to perform at The Movement, which is set to kick off Saturday at 10 a.m. and run until at least 11 p.m.

In addition to the BMX exhibition, groups expected to perform at The Movement include reMedyz, Stacy Cole, Three Times Driven, Outer Fringe, Coming Of Age, Xstatic Dance Team, Ruins Restored, R.S.R, Braver By the 2nd, Nine Lashes, Chunky Son, The Jason Wilkins Band, Revelation X and Cainan.

Duncan said admission is free, but donations are encouraged.

“No amount is too small,” she said. “If the whole community is helping them they can meet their goals.”

Victim Services of Cullman Director Kenosha Davenport said the fundraiser should be a big help to the agency.

“This is definitely going to help us out,” she said. “All the services we offer are free and this will be a huge help for our operating costs.”

All of the money raised from the event will go to the VSOC.

Victim Services of Cullman is a United Way agency that provides shelter and related services to local victims of domestic violence and their children. The VSOC 24-hour crisis line can be reached at 734-6100.
