Gardendale Seniors By Mack McConnell

The North Jefferson News

When the better celebrations are held, I assure you that they will be here at the Garden-dale Senior Center.

This past Saturday Peggy put together, as we had expected, a great program to let our community know that we have reached our first big milestone of five wonderful years.

Thanks to all who gave so much to make this fifth anniversary such a success and let me be the first to invite you to our next big celebration which will be our 10th anniversary.

Yesterday we enjoyed listening to the music of the Brookridge Drifters who are under the leadership of Harold Freeman. He will be followed by Jerry Bosworth’s group on the morning of June 24. Our Tuesday night gatherings continue from 6 to 9 p.m.. Come and be a part of the fun.

On Monday, Mackie Horowitz, the coordinator for the Jefferson County Service for Senior Citizens, brought an interesting program. She is seeking new volunteers.

The McWane Center is planning two events for the seniors. The first is for the Golden Eagles and will be held June 18. There will be a special presentation about vision and IMAX Theater will have a showing of “The Grand Canyon.” The same program will be held on June 30 from 1 to 6 p.m. and will be open to all seniors. Transportation will be provided for center members.

Come on in on Friday — Library Lisa will be presenting a Summer Travelogue movie.

On Wednesday at 10:00 a.m., Chris Taylor from Edward Jones Financial will be giving a free presentation which could be very helpful to many of you.

On the June 26, the Golden Eagles will be taking another trip. This one is to the Radio Museum.

This year’s “Senior Prom” will be on June 27 from 7 to 10 p.m.

I’ll give you more of the July schedule later on but I want you to go ahead and put July 10 on your calendars now. Starting at 9 a.m., the UAB School of Optometry will be giving tests for glaucoma. You must sign up ahead of time to receive this test. You might be surprised if you have not had any testing done recently. I know that when I was told I had glaucoma I was greatly surprised.

If this condition is not treated promptly you may well go blind. It sometimes works fast in older age, so take advantage of this chance to get tested on July 10. To get signed up see Peggy while you are at the center or call 631-7240.

With the heat we’ve been having, it seems we’ve already been in summer for a while, although summer only officially starts on Saturday . I hope your entire summer is a good one. Come in and stay cool with us.

Until next week, God bless.
