Gardendale Seniors by Mack McConnell

The North Jefferson News

We were honored this past Wednesday to have Mayor Clemons use the senior center to present his progress report on the City of Gardendale. With the help of slides and other informative material, we were enlightened on what has and is taking place.

Sometimes we are not cognizant of the things that are happening all around us day by day. When you look back over what has been accomplished, you realize that a lot of activity has been going on. The mayor brought us up to date on projects that are now in the making and some that are presently taking place.

The mayor graciously credits seniors for their interest in the city’s progress and growth. He is willing to listen to everyone’s thoughts, even when they are not in agreement with his own.

Thanks again, Mr. Mayor, for coming forward with an update that we all are interested in. Also, thanks to all who took the time to show up and take an interest in the community around us.

We hope that everyone had a good time at the Magnolia Festival on Saturday. It was a well-planned event and a credit to our community.

The biggest trouble maker you will ever have to deal with watches you from the mirror every morning.

It is a proven fact that you can enjoy your senior years if you live simply, love generously, care deeply, and speak kindly, leaving the rest up to God.

Tuesday was a great musical day for our seniors. In the morning we had the Four Picks and a Bow putting on a first rate performance with Jerry Bosworth heading it up. Jerry brought The Country Pickers back last night for their delightful music, soothing the soul with their welcoming sounds. It gets better each week, so come on in between 6 and 9 p.m. and you be the judge. We’re still bringing finger foods for the 7:15 break.

Gardendale is one area where we have the very best in elderly care. Today, at 10 a.m., Glenda Harper will give us all of the details we need to know about the Covenant Place. Some of our group have never visited this up to date facility that provides care for seniors and others who can no longer live alone due to their medical conditions.

Working children find it difficult to care for their aging parents and family members. If you may be facing making such a decision now or in the future, come on in to learn more about this option.

Whenever there is a fifth Tuesday in the month, we call on the Covenant House to come to entertain us here at the center. Over the past we have come to look forward to their coming and presenting their talents to us. We enjoy every minute of it.

I remind you once again that on April 30, Dan Mosley will be here at 10 a.m. to discuss reverse mortgages. This can be a good thing for the right people. You need to know the whole story on this and Dan can give it to you. Bring the family members that probably have more reservations about it than you do and let them clear up their minds.

So many times after age 60 your knees buckle, but your belt won’t. We are just like a raisin that once was a grape, having seen our better days.

There have always been conniving lowlifes who take advantage of various situations. Seniors used to be considered “easy marks,” but not so today. Seniors have many avenues to protect themselves if they seek them out. If you think you need legal help and cannot afford a lawyer, call Peggy at 631-7240. She will give you a number to call where you might be able to find help. These schemers will back off quickly when they are being challenged.

There has never been a better time to be a senior. Baby Boomers — you can learn a lot from today’s seniors. They’ve “been there and done that.”

Be positive and stay active.

Until next week. God bless.
