A letter to organizers of Moulton ‘Chicken’ fest

Dear Moulton “Chicken and Egg Festival” Organizers,
I’m writing to let you know how much I enjoyed the wondrous event held in your fine city on Saturday.
I must admit my friends and I didn’t know what to expect as we drove miles and miles down Alabama 157 through picturesque locales like Cullman, Danville and finally, Moulton.
The festival itself was in a prime location, on the grounds of Lawrence County High School. Upon entering the school’s auditorium, we found a treasure trove of vendors selling stuff. And what glorious stuff it was. This was no ordinary stuff. There were baked goods, pens that lit up, cigarette holders with a likeness of Tupac Shakur and live turtles and lizards for only $20 to $25!
Through the rear entrance of the auditorium laid the festival itself. The smell of funnel cake rushed through my nose as my friends and I browsed through boxes of more stuff in an outside vending booth. I was most intrigued by the Asian gentleman who was selling live brassieres for only $12 to $16!
Over the course of a few hours, we participated in the following activities: scoping out the food vendors, scoping out Moulton’s finest citizens, playing Bingo (which we lost at) and visiting with live Bantam chickens!
The band Pure Prairie League is actually what brought us to Moulton and they were great. The chicken on a stick and deviled eggs were my secondary reasons. I found the former, but the latter was nowhere in sight. No deviled eggs at a “Chicken and Egg Festival”? Preposterous!
Would I ever attend another “Chicken and Egg Festival” in Moulton? No. The absence of deviled eggs and the fact that Moulton’s in a dry county was a substantial bummer.
However, I do admire what you’re doing. Some ideas for the future: deviled eggs, more 1970s country-rock acts like Poco and Firefall and the consideration of moving the festival to Birmingham.
If you can accomplish these things, you can count me in next year. Thanks for everything, “Chicken and Egg Festival” organizers. Against all odds, I really did have a good time.
