Cheatwood blanks Lady Rockets

Mortimer Jordan senior pitcher Michelle Cheatwood fired a shutout at the Gardendale Lady Rockets on Thursday night. Cheatwood (9-1) threw a complete game four-hitter and struck out five, while walking only one.

The No. 5-ranked Lady Blue Devils scored one run in each the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Danae Hays blasted a solo home run off loser Kendall Thomas (4-4) in the fifth inning.

Morgan Estell scored another Jordan run when she doubled, moved to third on an error and scored on Brandy Worden’s fielder’s choice. Alyssa Linn singled and scored the other Jordan (15-3) run.

No. 10 Gardendale slipped to 10-7 overall.

For Gardendale, Thomas, Kellie Johnson, Kayla Estes and Emily Dodson had one single each.

Cadi Oliver (1-2) the loss despite not allowing an earned run. She threw a complete game three-hitter and struck out seven and walked none.

At the plate, Britani Howell and Megan Westbrook both went 2-for-3, but the Lady Wildcats (6-4) stranded nine runners on base.

“We hit the ball, but we left way too many girls on base,” Fultondale head coach David Reed said. “We had our chances, but we didn’t take advantage of them.”

In a Friday night contest, Fultondale’s Shelbi Smith threw her second shutout of the season as she improved to 2-2.

She threw all seven innings, allowing three hits, walking two and striking out eight.

Smith lowered her ERA under one run per game, as she now has a 0.99 ERA after four starts.

At the plate, Britani Howell, Cadi Oliver and Raine Estes all had two hits each.

Fultondale improved to 7-4 overall.

Heather Anderson (8-1) threw a three inning no-hitter and struck out seven.

At the plate for the Lady Yellow Jackets, Kortney Sloan went 2-for-3 with two triples and two RBIs.

Jennifer Tolbert also drove in two runs as Corner improved to 16-7.

Senior Elizabeth Allred (5-4) threw a complete game three-hitter and struck out 10 batters.

At the plate, junior catcher Mandy Slatton powered the offense with a 3-for-3 night and two RBIs. Two of her hits were doubles.

Corner is now 17-7 overall heading into this weekend’s tournament at Springville High School.
