Jordan reaches county final

HUEYTOWN — The Mortimer Jordan Lady Blue Devils made their No. 8 ranking in the Alabama Sports Writers Association look to be too low this week as they topped two top-ranked clubs in Hueytown and Gardendale during pool play in the County tournament.

On Wednesday evening, they beat Clay-Chalkville, 4-1, before whipping No. 2-ranked, 6A, Hueytown, 2-1, and on Thursday, they beat bitter cross-county rival No. 4 ranked, 5A, Gardendale, 6-0.

Michelle Cheatwood (4-1), fired a four-hitter and struck out eight. She was working on a shutout in the sixth inning when the Lady Cougars put together back-to-back hits for the only run of the game.

Brandy Worden led the way at the plate with a 3-for-3 day. She scored once, on Shelbey Faucett’s two-run single in the first inning.

Morgan Estell went 1-for-2 with a walk and a solo home run that cleared the left field fence by a good 20 feet.

Faucett went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Hueytown 1


The Lady Devils won in extra innings, with the winning run coming on a sacrifice fly to deep right field off the bat of Blair Johnson to score Erin Whitlock.

Jordan had only one hit in the game, a solo homer by Faucett in the second inning.

Johnson (3-0) was the winner, throwing a three-hitter and struck out seven. She allowed no earned runs.

Gardendale 0


Cheatwood (5-1), threw a four-hitter and struck out four as she held the Lady Rockets scoreless.

At the plate, Estell got the Lady Devils off to a quick start with a solo homer in the first inning, later she added a two-run homer.

Johnson added a home run and two RBIs. Alyssa Linn had a run and an RBI. Worden went 2-for-2 and collected a walk. Kayla Cox went 1-for-2 with a double. Whitlock went 1-for-2 with a double, as well.

Katie Argent (3-1) took the loss.

Corner wins pool

The Lady Yellow Jackets went 3-0 in the McAdory pool. Corner whipped the hosts McAdory, Pleasant Grove and Pinson Valley.

Heather Anderson (3-0) fired a no-hitter to pick up the win. She struck out 10 and walked only one.

Catcher Mandy Slatton went 4-for-4 with a double, and RBI and scored twice.

Jennifer Tolbert went 3-for-4 with a triple and two runs scored. Haley Brown had one hit, scored once and drove in two runs.

Pleasant Grove 0


Elizabeth Allred (3-2), threw four innings of one-hit ball to collect the win. She struck out six.

Haley Anderson went 2-for-2 with three-run homer and a double.

Kortney Sloan, Preslie Cruce and Meg Adams all went 1-for-2 with one RBI.

Pinson Valley 0


It was the Anderson sister’s show as Heather (4-0) picked up the win and Haley provided most of the offense.

Heather threw a five-hitter and struck out 10, while Haley went 3-for-3 with a solo home run in the first inning and a two-run homer in the fourth. She also had a two-RBI double in the third inning.

She totaled five RBIs.

Tolbert scored three runs, had three hits and stole three bases.

Cruce went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.

Sloan had one hit, scored once and had two RBIs.

Gardendale 1,

Corner 0


Beth Erwin (4-1) threw a two-hitter and struck out five as Gardendale moved into the semi-finals.

Erwin went 3-for-3 at the plate. Kellie Johnson went 1-for-3 and scored the only Gardendale run on an error.

Meg Adams had both hits for th Corner (8-5).

Gardendale improved to 10-5-1.

Hueytown 4,

Gardendale 0


The Lady Rockets fell in the semi-finals Friday night to Hueytown.

Thomas took the loss with 4 1/3 innings of four-hit ball. She struck out one and allowed three earned runs. Erwin pitched 2/3 inning and allowed one earned run and struck out one.

Erwin had Gardendale’s only base hit, a single.

The Lady Rockets slipped to 10-6-1.

Pinson Valley 0


The Lady Devils moved into the semi-finals with an easy win over Pinson.

Cheatwood (6-1) threw a complete game to pick up the win.

Estell powered the offense with a two-run homer.

Clay-Chalkville 2


The Lady Blue Devils moved into the championship game against Hueytown with an extra-time win against Clay.

Estell scored the winning run on Faucett’s single to left. Clay then put runners on first and third in the bottom of the inning, but failed to score.

Logan Woodward went 1-for-3 with a double and Faucett had two hits.

Johnson (4-0) picked up the win with eight strikeouts on a five-hitter.
