Offensive production wasn’t a problem for Cullman High’s softball team Friday afternoon. The Lady Bearcats scored 17 runs off almost 30 hits in two games against Curry.
Cullman may have found ways to produce runs, but hitting is only half the game.
Because of a few defensive letdowns, Cullman got caught up in a slugfest with Curry in the first game of a doubleheader. And the end result: Curry beat the Lady Bearcats 12-8.
Immediately after the game, Cullman coach Marc Ponder held a team meeting in left field to discuss the problem. And judging from the results of game two, the Lady Bearcats must have absorbed what their coach was saying.
Not only did Cullman swing the bats well in game two, but the Lady Bearcats also cut down on the defensive miscues. And the end results: Cullman beat Curry 9-1 in the nightcap.
“We came back and played like Bearcats,” Ponder said. “We swung the bats well, we pitched good and played good defense. That made a big difference.”
After scattering 16 hits in game one, Cullman (10-6) picked right where it left off in the nightcap.
Erin Lopez led the Lady Bearcats at the plate by going 2-for-2 with a homer and a single, while McKenzie Fetner and Abby Knight all had two hits each.
Leslie Cork, Lacey Cork, Jenny Haney and Kayla Hunt also had one hit each for Cullman.
Emily Segroves recorded the win for Cullman. She struck out six while holding Curry to only six hits.
Even though Cullman closed out the night strong, the Lady Bearcats started the day a little shaky.
Curry jumped on Cullman early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. The Lady Yellow Jackets scored one run in the next four innings to extend its lead to 7-3.
After Curry added a pair of insurance runs in the top of the sixth, Cullman battled back.
Segroves led off with a double, and Knight pushed her across the plate with an RBI double. Leslie Cork cut the lead to four with an RBI single.
The Lady Yellow Jackets responded with three runs in the top of the seventh, but Cullman made one last push in the bottom half of the inning.
With Lopez on first base with one out, Alison Meriweather drove an RBI double into deep center field. Segroves followed with a two-out single, and Knight blasted a two-run homer over the center-field fence to cut the lead to four.
Leslie Cork led Cullman at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double. Lacey Cork, Jenny Haney, Meriweather, Segroves and Knight all went 2-for-4.
