A fleet of six new police cars will soon hit the streets in northern Jefferson County.

Warrior city council members voted Monday night to spend $157,057 for four Dodge Chargers and two Chevrolet Impalas for the city’s police department.

The city will make four payments of $42,154.08.

Besides the cars, the price that the council approved includes radios, lights, sirens and other police equipment that will be installed on the vehicles.

The Dodge Chargers will serve as patrol cars, while the Impalas will be unmarked chief’s and investigator’s cars, according to Investigations Sgt. Corey Archer of the Warrior Police Department.

All four Chargers will be white. The department will then have the cars painted and striped to match its existing vehicles.

The city is buying the Chargers from Ken Boggs Ford Chrysler Dodge in Opelieka. The Impalas will be from Larry Puckett Chevrolet in Prattville.

The police department should get the cars in three or four months, according to Archer.

When the cars arrive, the department will then auction off four cars that officers are currently using, according to Archer.

“We have to use everything we have right now,” he said. “We’re waiting until we get the others in before we set up the auction.”

In other business, the council:

• agreed to offer a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of local vandals. The police department is searching for the person or persons who have spray-painted a bridge on Dana Road and buildings in Warrior.

• voted to take bids for a brush truck for the Public Works Department

• accepted a donation from Hal Cook of 2.5 acres near the city park. The council has not decided what to do with the land.

The next Warrior city council meeting is scheduled for March 17 at 7 p.m., with a pre-council session at 6:30 p.m. Meetings are held at City Hall.
