Mary Elizabeth Fitzgerald Reed, age 85 of Gardendale, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2008. Mrs. Reed was an active member of the former North Birmingham Presbyterian Church and Gardendale Presbyterian Church. In early retirement, she was a resident of Foley, where she was an active member of Gulf Shores Presbyterian Church. She enjoyed her extended family and organizing family gatherings on holidays. She began employment out of high school with Kress’ making $9 per week. She changed occupations to secretarial work with Long Lewis Hardware and the completed her career at Citadel Cement Corporation, from which she retired. She made many life long friends along her paths of employment. She was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Reed; parents, George Thomas and Elizabeth Morgan Fitzgerald; sister, Sara Louise Fitzgerald Snow. Survivors include, sisters, Evelyn Boozer and Alma Lawrence, both of Gardendale, and Betty McKinney of Decatur; nieces and nephews, Carolyn (George) Edwards, Marilyn Steadham, Suzanne (Jim) Frazier, Dan (Barbara) Lawrence, Susan (Ivan) Smith, Lori (Bob) Poole, Barry “Butch” (Anna) Cornell and Rob (Myra) Reed; several other nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews. A chapel service was held on Tuesday at Ridout’s Gardendale Chapel. Burial followed in Oakwood Memorial Gardens. Pastor Judy Shephard and Rev. Elizabeth Goodrich officiated.
