David Osborn, the son of Steve and Anita Osborn of Gardendale, has advanced to finalist standing in the 2008 National Merit Scholar-ship Program, a distinction that places him in a group of students representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high-school seniors.

Osborn is a senior at the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School. He is the president of the German National Honor Society, a member of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Honor Society and the Tri M National Music Honor Society.

He was the front ensemble section leader in the Shades Valley Marching Band, percussion section leader in the symphonic band and section leader in the 2006 and 2007 All-County Band. He is also a member of the Shades Valley Percussion Ensemble.

While studying at JCIB, Osborn has received awards in German, chemistry, geometry, algebra II, English and biology. He was named a Jefferson County Super Scholar. He has accepted a presidential scholarship from Auburn University, where he plans on majoring in pre-pharmacy.
