Fultondale
Service day to be held
The City of Fultondale is inviting volunteers from the community to participate in a Community Service Day at Black Creek Park on Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to noon. Tasks will include the planting of a blueberry-butterfly garden, installing a split rail fence, removing kudzu, mimosa and privet and staking willows in eroded stream banks. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves, shovels and rakes and be willing to wear work gloves, durable shoes and/or rubber boots. Relay event to be held Jan. 22

Birmingham
Civil rights museum awarded
The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) recently won the 2007 National Medal for Museum and Library Service, the highest award for outstanding public service and contributions to its community. BCRI won the award for its work as the nation’s premier educational center for studying the civil rights movement.
Montgomery
States make MySpace deal
In a victory for social networking safety, Attorney General Troy King and 49 other attorneys general announced recently that MySpace has agreed to significant steps to better protect children on its web site. Specific changes and policies that MySpace agreed to develop include: allowing parents to submit their children’s e-mail addresses so MySpace can prevent anyone using those email addresses from setting up profiles, making the default setting “private” for profiles of 16- and 17-year-olds and promising to respond within 72 hours to inappropriate content complaints.
