Ronnie Chambers of Foley, Alabama passed away Saturday, Jan. 5, 2008. He was born Aug. 7, 1948 in Birmingham, and lived there until he fulfilled his desire to move closer to the Gulf Coast four years ago. Ron’s wonderful life journey began in the small community of Inglenook; here he established skills and relationships which would remain with him throughout his life. He attended Phillips High School from 1964-1968, where he excelled in athletics. Some of his many accolades received by Ron during high school were: class president, lettered and started each year in which he participated in basketball (3), baseball (3) and football (1); city all-tournament team in B team basketball; Birmingham News All-City Team MVP in basketball, 1966; All-State selection, basketball, 1966; named all star and participant in the Alabama High School Association North-South basketball tournament, 1966. He attended Jeff State Junior College on a basketball athletic scholarship and was also a member of the baseball team. He also attended Jacksonville State University. Golf was a passion of Ron’s and he excelled in that sport as well throughout his life. Ron served proudly as a Firefighter with the city of Birmingham for many years until he was forced to retire early due to a knee injury. He attained the rank of lieutenant with the fire department in a most unorthodox fashion. After having been passed over a promotion in a manner which he deemed unfair, Ron and some fellow firefighters filed suit in federal court, which resulted in an actual written opinion being rendered by the United States Supreme Court. The Supreme Court decision resulted in Ron’s promotion to lieutenant, retroactively with all due back pay. Ron was also a successful homebuilder and swimming pool contractor. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Jean Chambers. He is survived by his wife, Jackie Chambers, Foley; son Jay (Dawn) Chambers, Gardendale; daughter Jill Chambers (Marc) Robinson, McCalla; grandchildren Parker Chambers, Jenna Chambers and Ashton Robinson; brother Michael L. (“Mitch”) Chambers, Mountain Brook; sister Kathy (Henry) Long, Summerdale; Charles “Ed” Chamblee (Rachael), Mobile; Ken (Button) Smith, Jr.; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many special friends. He loved and enjoyed life, his family and friends. So we may join together and celebrate Ron’s life, his family will receive friends for a memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 12, 2008 at Gardendale First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall located at 940 Main Street, Gardendale. There will be a ceremony from noon – 1 p.m. with visitation and a reception to follow from 1 – 3 p.m. In Lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contribution be made in Ronnie’s name to the Birmingham Fire Fighters Association or Covenant Hospice in Foley.
