Beginning Wednesday, two schools boy’s basketball teams from the North Jefferson area will be vying for the Hanceville Thanksgiving tournament title.
The Corner Yellow Jackets and the defending tournament champions, the Gardendale Rockets will compete for the title during the three-day event.
This year’s tourney will end on Friday night instead of the traditional Saturday finish, so as not to conflict with the Alabama at Auburn football game.
Corner will face Good Hope in the second game of the day on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Then the Rockets follow, as they tangle with West Limestone at 7 p.m.
Should each club win, they would move into the semi-finals on Thursday. The Yellow Jackets and Rockets could meet in Friday night’s final, if both clubs are victorious in their first two games of the tournament.
Corner has participated in the holiday tournament for several years, but last season was the first appearance by Gardendale. Head coach Bill Griffin’s’ club took the title, but four starters are gone from last year’s champions.
Another local club taking to the hardwood over the Holiday is the Fultondale Wildcats, who will play in the McAdory Holiday Tournament, which runs through Saturday.
