Garden tip: Prune deciduous trees and shrubs (those that lose their leaves in the winter) before new growth appears in the spring. Prune flowering trees and shrubs after they bloom. Make sure you use clean, very sharp tools. Proper pruning encourages denser branches and new growth. Cut stems and branches close to the bud at an angle. Be sure to clean tools with alcohol after each use. Don’t wait to remove dead or diseased branches: Remove as soon as they appear.
