Springville stuns Jordan, 40-25

Mortimer Jordan’s 40-25 loss to Springville on Friday night leaves the Blue Devils with a slim chance of reaching the playoffs.

Leading the team’s valiant efforts was Brent Nation, who rushed for 200 yards on 16 carries, he started the off the scoring for the Blue Devils in the first quarter strong with a 27-yard run, tying the game at 6-all. The point-after attempt was blocked.

Nation was also a key player in the second quarter, scoring more two touchdowns. The first came on a 5-yard run to up the led to 12-6.

The Blue Devils then went for a 2-point conversion attempt, but it failed.

Then Nation caught a 45-yard scoring pass from quarterback Jon Paul Motte. When Tyler Kimbrough was true on the point-after, the Blue Devils enjoyed a 19-6 lead.

But then the Tigers got their offense untracked and scored 14 unanswered points to grab a 20-19 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, Motte scored on a 1-yard run, but the Tiger offense added 13 more points and the Blue Devils trailed after three quarters, 33-25.

Springville added one more touchdown in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.

The loss, along with Cullman’s defeat of Gardendale, forced a 3-way tie for fourth place in the 5A, Region 6 standings. Gardendale, Mortimer Jordan and Springville, all stand at 3-4 after Friday night’s play and the tiebreaker will likely involve non-region wins against opponents in classifications as large, or larger than a team’s own classification. Jordan lost to Hewitt-Trussville in non-region play and needs to beat Oxford next Friday to have any hope of reaching the state playoffs.
