Hornets sting the Yellow Jackets

CORNER — The Corner Yellow Jackets lost their final home game of the 2007 season on Friday night to the Locust Fork Hornets, 34-13. The game was tied 7-all at the half, unfortunately for the Yellow Jackets, Locust Fork’s offense came out hot in the second half.
In the first quarter, the Corner defense shut down the Hornets’ offense three times inside the 20 yard line. The third time, Corner’s Caleb Hoyle intercepted a Locust Fork pass at the 5-yard line to stop the Hornet drive.
The scoring started in the second quarter when the Hornets’ David Mosley intercepted a Corner pass and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown. After a John Atkinson point-after kick, Locust Fork led 7-0.
The Yellow Jackets answered back on the very next series. Corner drove the ball 80 yards in 10 plays. Caleb Hoyle capped off the drive with an outstanding 28-yard run for a touchdown. He broke two tackles on his way to the end zone. Corner kicker Katelyn Geddings added the point-after kick to tie the score 7-all.
On the ensuing kickoff, Locust Fork’s David Mosley returned the ball 85 yards for what seemed to be another Hornets touchdown. However, Locust Fork was called for a personal foul which wiped out the the touchdown. The Corner defense was able to hold Locust Fork from scoring for the rest of the first half to maintain the tie.
On the opening drive of the second half, Locust Fork drove the ball 56 yards in only three plays. Most of the yardage came from a Colton Armstrong 54-yard run. Quarterback Kyle Smith finished the drive when he ran it in from 1-yard out. After another Atkinson point-after kick, Locust Fork led 14-7.
Corner answered back late in the third quarter. After two big runs by Devin Cuda, 34 yards and 22 yards respectively, Caleb Hoyle snuck it in from 1-yard out to make the score 14-13. The Yellow Jackets failed to convert the point-after and still trailed by one. The drive took five plays and covered 74 yards.
Unfortunately for Corner on the ensuing kickoff, the Hornets’ Colton Armstrong returned it 84 yards for a Locust Fork touchdown. This made the score 20-13. On the point-after kick, Corner’s Zac Reeves blocked the Hornet kick to keep game within seven points.
Late in the fourth quarter Locust Fork put the game out of reach. With less than two minutes to go in the game, Locust Fork stopped a Corner drive at the 5-yard line. On the next play from scrimmage, Josh Bollen ran it in from 5 yards out. After the Atkinson point-after kick, Locust Fork led 27-13.
The final score in the game came when Bollen intercepted a Yellow Jacket pass and returned it 21 yards for the Hornet touchdown just 28 seconds left to play. The Atkinson point-after kick made the final 34-13.
