Gardendale Seniors By Mack McConnell

The North Jefferson News

Even the brightest and apt need words and gestures of encouragement from time to time.

This past Tuesday and Wednesday our director, Peggy Hoback Clark, met and associated with many others serving in like positions, along with county and state officials. They assembled themselves on the state’s highest mountain to learn and to share ideas they could bring back and relate to their constituents.

The travelogue is on this morning with Collette Travel at 10 a.m. so hurry on in and you can view the big screen and you’ll be surprised what’s being offered out there. On this Friday at 10 a.m., we have the Low Vision Support.

On Oct. 3, Blue Cross/ Blue Shield will hold a mini seminar which is open to the public. The ARSEA meeting is on Oct. 10 at 10 a.m. The public is invited to this as well. Catch a bus here on Oct. 17 at 8:30 a.m. to go to the fair grounds for seniors.

It’s Fat Wednesday Mardi Gras for seniors 60 plus. Decorated umbrella competition and parade. Lunch will be provided.

Featured senior

Our featured senior this week is Joseph Donald Isom. Some people call him “Camper Joe.” Joe lives in Fultondale. He was born in Hackleburg and has lived in Fultondale for the past 28 years. Joe went to school at Wiggenton Junior High and Hackleburg High. Joe spent 33 years of life working with American National Can. I believed he said he retired in 1999.

Joe married Kathrine Peppers in 1956 and have lived together 51 years. They have two daughters, Donna Jo Hardin and Daphne Kay Isom.

Joe says he loves playing music often in his church. As most of you know, he joined up with Craford Rook’s Bluegrass Group. They play for us seniors here on the first Tuesday of the month. He enjoys going to the bluegrass festivals. Joe and his family have always enjoyed going camping and have traveled around the country enjoying the scenery and being outdoors.

Joe says he likes to come to the center here as the people are the most friendly that he has ever seen. He enjoys fooling around with old tractors and fixing up antique cars. We appreciate you being with the band, Joe, and looking forward to you coming here.

It’s been great being with you all again this week. Take care. Be positive and may God bless.
