Gardendale Seniors By Mack McConnell

The North Jefferson News

Just five months from today we will be celebrating Christmas.

It seems to me that the older we get, the faster time gets away from us. Today will be no more. It behooves us to make the most of each and every day, even though we may be getting a little older.

Retirement starts and the work for good begins. You will be blessed by what you do for anyone.

We have been having some great music days here at the center. On July 17 the Brookridge Drifters gave us one of their better performances. Then yesterday we came right back with an outstanding program by the Four Picks and a Bow. You don’t have to go to Nashville, folks, to hear the best as we have them here every Tuesday.

I know everyone will want to be with us on July 31. Jody Newman, a very gifted lady will be bringing her keyboards. We will have a singalong and play name that tune.

We have folks who just love to play Bingo. We have some great callers who lead this game every Monday and Thursday.

Some of you have not yet made arrangements for your booth at the Gardendale health fair, so please call Peggy at 631-7240 as soon as possible. Last year our health fair was awarded as the best; we want this year to be just as good.

Be at our center every Friday morning for pancakes and coffee. We appreciate the law firm of Townes, Woods and Roberts for sponsoring this weekly enjoyment. We are grateful to them, Terry Wilson from Ridouts and others who help us with our programs. If anyone would like to be a part of promoting senior activities, just contact Peggy.

Every extra program that we have usually has a little monetary and time cost. We want this community to be proud of our senior center because we who attend are very proud and I assure you that those who help the center will be blessed.

Featured person

Four our featured person this week, I chose a lovely lady who is not a senior by any means but has become a part of our hearts here at the center. Her name is Leslie Ann Gurganus. She is a volunteer, coming in two or three times a week to offer her services in making our center a better place. Leslie Annie, as some call her, resides in Mt. Olive and has lived most of her life in this area. She attended school in Gardendale and Hewitt-Trusville.

Everyone loves Leslie and appreciates her being with us. Thanks, Leslie, for being part of our lives.

The difference between stumbling blocks and stepping stones is the way a man uses them.

I was glad to see some of our folks back who had been sick or injured. We pray for all the rest of you out there that still can’t come. We miss you when you don’t come. Each and every person is vital to our center. It’s kind of like those picture puzzles we have out in the sun room. Some of you try to put them together, but if a piece is missing you have no way to make it complete. In the same way we need all of you to make our group complete.

Until next week, God bless.
