Over 10,000 in county schools

More students than ever are enrolled in Cullman County schools this year, members of the Cullman County Commission on Education said at a meeting Tuesday.

Superintendent Nancy Horton said 10,064 students attend Cullman County schools, up from last year’s total of 9,789.

“Ten thousand students is a milestone and 275 students is a lot of students,” Horton said. “But growth also causes the problems that come with growth.”

School Board member Steve Freeman said students and staff at Harmony School will not be placed in portable classrooms this year, but a growing student population means the school must get new classrooms by next year.

“Next year it’s going to grow and we don’t have enough room there now,” he said.

Freeman said 255 students are enrolled at Harmony. He suggested the board eventually approve an addition of six classrooms to the facility.

Horton said the enrollment at some schools has slightly declined while the enrollments at other schools increased. For example, Cold Springs Elementary had 76 students this year, down from 79 students in 2005. The enrollments of West Point, Fairview and Parkside elementary schools increased this year, Horton said.

The county school system has 958 kindergartners, an increase from 917 last year, she said.
