The city council waived Street Department fees Monday, so the city’s Waterworks can upgrade pipes that run under city streets.
The measure removed a $100 cut fee and a $10,000 surety bond for the Waterworks.
The entity was facing the fees to complete work laying new water lines under Edward Street and Louise Street in the city limits.
The project will upgrade existing two-inch pipe in the area, replacing it with six-inch pipe.
According to Councilman Hubert Jones and Larry Cornett, the project bring greater water pressure and better fire protection to the area.
According to Mayor Katie Whitley, the council waived the fees, because it did not make sense to charge the Waterworks, since they are actually owned by the city.
“We’d be charging ourselves,” she said.
It is not clear when work will begin on the new lines.
