John Thomas Bryant
John Thomas Bryant of 32 Evergreen Road in Danville, passed away at 5:30 a.m. Friday, July 14, 2006, at the Folsom Center in Cullman. Mr. Bryant is survived by his wife of 63 years, Lorene Dutton Bryant; a son, John S. (Laurie) Bryant of Vinemont; a daughter, Pamela Downing Bryant Owens of Falkville; four grandchildren, Mitchell Bryant Owens, John Wesley Owens, David Owens and Drew Owens; and a sister, Ola Smithson. He was preceded in death by his parents, William “Bill” Bryant and Oma Brazill Bryant.
John T. Bryant was born on Feb. 3, 1920, in Cullman County. He attended Battleground Elementary School and later moved to Cullman High School for four years while his father, William “Bill” Bryant, served as tax collector in Cullman County. He completed his high school education at West Point and graduated in 1940.
During World War II, Mr. Bryant served four years in the European campaign primarily attached to the 346th fighter squadron of the 8th Army Air Force. John T. Bryant was a rural letter carrier for 27 years delivering mail beginning with Route 2 Danville, later Route 3 and finally Route 1 Danville in Morgan County. John became a member of McKendree Methodist Church on April 6, 1953, and was an active member for 53 years and served as choir director for 26 years. Mr. Bryant also served as a school board member from 1957 to 1963 and as scout master from 1961 to 1963.
Mr. Bryant will be at Peck’s Funeral Home from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 15, 2006, for visitation. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 16 at McKendree Methodist Church, followed by the interment ceremony at Friendship Baptist Church Cemetery, south of Danville. Ministers officiating will be the Revs. Virgil Bone and Grad Tanner, along with Dr. David Parker. The body will lie in state at the church one hour prior to services.
