The Cullman Lady Bearcats rebounded from a 42-37 loss in the first round of the Northwest Christmas tournament in Lauderdale County by defeating the West Point Lady Warriors 59-40 on Tuesday night.

Despite being without coach Marc Ponder, who was sick at home with the stomach flu, the Lady Bearcats used strong guard play to knock off one of the county’s top teams by 19 points. Nathan Bates coached Cullman in both of the day’s games.

Andrea Mason led Cullman with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Caroline Weatherly added 15 points.

The post battle between top of the top girls players in the county — West Point’s Amanda Scott and Cullman’s Elizabeth Rowe — was subdued a bit with Scott suffering from a twisted ankle in the first round of the tournament. Both girls were strong defensively, as Scott finished with 13 points and Rowe chipped in eight points and 14 rebounds.

Also scoring for Cullman were Erin Meriweather with 11 points, Colleen McDaniel with three and Caley Whittemore with three.

Scoring for West Point were Kristi Kimbril with 12, Tiffany Hinkle with seven, Celina Blackwood with five, Emily Blackwood with two and Lindsey Kent with one.
