Residents don’t mind working on (holiday)

When Christmas fell on a Sunday this year, many employers decided the following Monday would be their holiday.

However, some didn’t, leaving an unlucky few to work while others recovered from holiday stress. But many working Monday in Cullman didn’t seem to mind.

Behind the counter at a Shell station on Highway 31, Beverly Gillis looked on the bright side.

“It would be nice to be off, but I do need the money,” she said. “At least we were closed yesterday.”

In addition to the expected emergency services, many convenience stores and fast-food restaurants stayed open Monday. Most working said it was just another Monday.

Alice McBrayer, night shift manager at Dairy Queen, said she didn’t mind.

“I’ve got no problem with it,” McBrayer said. “We were off yesterday, closed, and some of us will get an extra day off in the week to make up for it.”

Across the street at Movie Gallery, clerk Sallie Sloan was working Monday after covering the Christmas shift Sunday. Sloan said she volunteered to allow employees with spouses and children to take the day off.

“It was actually very busy yesterday,” Sloan said.

Manager Mickey Calloway said Monday was “just a regular business day for us.”

In a Chevron station on Highway 31, Kaye Netherton echoed Calloway’s sentiments.

“Christmas is over,” Netherton said. “This is just like a regular work day. We’ve been busy today.”
