Lady Raiders, Lady Broncos roll in Curry

Good Hope came away with a dominant performance in the Curry Holiday Tournament despite the absence of senior Whitney Neal on Monday afternoon.

The Lady Raiders routed Sumiton Christian 78-33 in first-round action as Heather Buchanan poured in a game-high 26 points.

Despite trailing 10-9 after one period of play, the Lady Raiders outscored their foes 27-4 in the second frame to runaway with a victory.

Good Hope led 36-14 at halftime and 57-23 after three quarters of play.

Jessica Raper finished with 19 points while Samantha Stone and Natalie Corser chipped in 10 each.

Good Hope plays the winner of Hanceville and Curry tonight at 7:30 p.m.



Walker 58, Vinemont 53 (girls): Vinemont was unable to overcome a 16-point halftime deficit in the first round of the Curry Holiday Tournament.

Despite trailing by double digits for much of the game, the Lady Eagles almost came back and stunned their Class 5A opponents.

Vinemont trailed 16-11 after one period, 35-19 at half and 44-33 after three quarters of play.

Brittany Speegle led the way with 19 points while Macy Bailey added 14. Kristyn Landrum and Molly Gallion added six points apiece.

The Lady Eagles meet Sumiton Christian this afternoon at 4:30.



Holly Pond 42, Addison 39 (girls): The Lady Broncos ended Addison’s perfect season in a low-scoring affair in the first round of the Curry Holiday Tournament.

Brittany Bagwell led Holly Pond and all scorers with 17 points while Jessica Laursen added 12.

Addison was led by Jesse Willingham with 12 points, but missed two 3-pointers late in the game with one coming at the buzzer.

Kayla Carden and Jasmine Marks chipped in 10 points for the losers while Haley Wiggins added seven.

Holly Pond faces Walker at 6 p.m. today, while Addison meets the loser of Curry and Hanceville at 3 p.m.



Addison 61, Hatton 43 (boys):The Bulldogs ran their win streak to open the season to six games with a 17-point victory over Hatton on Monday in the Speake Holiday Tournament.

Addison battled back from a sluggish start to gain a 34-23 lead and thanks to a strong inside presence of Kyle Carden, Matt Naylor and Mark Stewart.

Stewart led the way with 15 points, nine rebounds and two blocks while Naylor and Carden chipped in 13 and 12, respectively.

Naylor also pulled down nine boards while Carden had two steals.

Addison plays the winner of Speake and Meek today at 7:30 p.m. in the semifinals.
